Family Mediation

At October Wellness Counseling, we recognize that family transitions—such as separation, divorce, and co-parenting—can bring emotional, legal, and relational challenges.Our family mediation service is led by a licensed clinical social worker and accredited family mediator in Quebec, and is here to guide you through this process with compassion and structure.

What is Family Mediation?

Family mediation is a voluntary, confidential, and structured process in which a neutral and qualified professional helps individuals in conflict most often separating or divorcing parents—reach fair, child-centered, and lasting agreements. Topics commonly addressed include:

  • Parenting time and custody
  • Access rights and schedules
  • Child or spousal support
  • Parental decision-making
  • Division of responsibilities or family assets

How does it work in Quebec?

In Quebec, the Ministry of Justice offers up to 5 hours of free family mediation for couples with dependent children (and up to 2.5 hours for revision of existing agreements).  These hours are fully covered by the government, and no legal referral is required.

No, mediation is voluntary. However, if you are initiating divorce or separation proceedings in court and have dependent children, you may be required to attend an information session on mediation before beginning legal procedures.

Yes, if you have at least one dependent child, you are  eligible for 5 hours of free mediation (and 2.5 hours for a revision of an existing agreement). These hours are funded by the Ministère de la Justice du Québec.

Additional sessions are available at a fixed hourly rate. We’ll discuss your needs during the first session and can plan a schedule accordingly. You may continue  privately if needed.

No. Mediation is a legal and standalone process. However, you are welcome to consult with a lawyer before, during, or after mediation to review your agreement. 

Yes. All sessions are conducted securely by videoconference or by phone, depending on your preference and availability.
